Registrations now open for Mind Matters Initiative Research Symposium

The RCVS' Second Mind Matters Initiative Research Symposium, ‘Understanding and supporting veterinary mental health’, is now open for registrations. The symposium, which will be held on Tuesday 24 September 2019, at Church House, London, will bring together researchers interested in all aspects of veterinary professionals’ wellbeing and mental health. The symposium will feature plenary speakers from mental health research, including: Sustaining resilience at work – what does the evidence tell us works?: Professor Neil Greenberg, Professor of Defence Mental Health, Consultant Academic Psychiatrist at King’s College London, Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ (RCP) Special Interest Group in Occupational Psychiatry. The impact of veterinarian suicide on colleagues: Dr Alexandra Pitman, Associate Professor in Psychiatry in the UCL Division of Psychiatry and an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust. UK listed status application approved to assure animal and animal product movements in a no-deal Brexit

The UK’s listed status application has been agreed by European Union (EU) Member States after it met the animal health and biosecurity assurances required for a third country to export live animals and animal products.

New website showcases important role of Veterinary Specialists

Educational charity the British College of Veterinary Specialists (BCVSp) has launched a new website, www.yourvetspecialist.org to help inform and guide animal owners. The new resource explains what Veterinary Specialists are and how they may be able to help, whatever the species of animal.

BEVA Trust Education and Welfare Castration Clinics 2019 get under way

An excellent start to 2019 with the first two UK projects now successfully completed. 23 BEVA members volunteered their expertise and time to support the two education and welfare clinics in March. The first clinic of the year was held near Durham with BEVA Council member Phil Cramp as lead veterinary surgeon. 11 vets and 2 vet nurses volunteered and 42 horses attended with 17 of those castrated.  At the second clinic in Cardiff, council member Ollie Crowe led the team in what was sometimes a vertically challenging but rewarding day. A total of 76 horses attended the clinic with 17 of those castrated.  The BEVA Trust and BHS joint initiative is in its fourth year and a total of 1134 horses have now attended the clinics around the country with 517 castrations. Racing appoints independent Chair for Horse Welfare Board

The former President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and past Chairman of World Horse Welfare, Barry Johnson, has been appointed as the independent chair of a new Horse Welfare Board on behalf of the British Racing industry. Barry worked closely with horseracing in his previous role at World Horse Welfare. He was appointed by an industry panel including the British Horseracing Authority, the Racecourse Association and The Horsemen’s Group.
