Equine Herpes Virus -1 (EHV-1) Abortion


A case of EHV-1 abortion was confirmed on 28th March 2012 by the Animal Health Trust. The affected mare was an 11 year old, partially vaccinated Thoroughbred from Warwickshire. A positive diagnosis was made by PCR of tissues recovered from a still born foal. The mare had no history of abortion however abortions had occurred on the stud at which she was boarding. There is one in-contact mare and control measures are being undertaken in accordance with the HBLB Codes of Practice.

Important Survey on Antimicrobial Usage

  There is a significant danger that there may be a restriction in our right to dispense antimicrobials throughout the European Union and the basis on which such a ban would be made, is based on little accurate data on prescribing habits in the companion (including equine) animal sector.  The lack of usage data means that the regulators may make an inappropriate decision which could adversely affect the welfare of horse's under-our-care and equine veterinary practice in the UK.     The FVE has developed a short survey on antimicrobial usage and we would recommend to all BEVA members, that they complete this survey, which should take no more than 5 or 10 minutes.   The goal of the survey is to provide a better insight into the decision making process of vets when he or she is considering antimicrobials as a therapy. This will help the FVE understand whether the measures taken so far to control veterinary antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are effective or not, and will serve as a basis for future actions.  The ans ...

HBLB Education Awards 2012

  The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) invites applications for Senior Equine Clinical Scholarships and Veterinary Research Training Scholarships for the year beginning 1 October 2012.     For 50 years the HBLB has invested to maintain a pool of highly skilled equine veterinary researchers and clinicians in Britain.  Former HBLB Scholars have gone on to be expert practitioners, clinical specialists, research leaders and industry figures.  They include leading veterinary surgeons at the Bell Equine Veterinary Clinic, Rossdale & Partners Veterinary Surgeons and Three Counties Equine Hospital, as well as the Chief Executive of the Animal Health Trust, Director of the Weipers Centre for Equine Welfare at the University of Glasgow, Head of Equine Studies at the University of Liverpool and Head of the Large Animal Hospital at the University of Edinburgh.   Applications are open for three types of award in 2012 and must be made by the prospective supervisor within an eligible University institution.   Joint appli ...
