Assessing weight and body condition

Horses have evolved to undergo seasonal weight fluctuation. However, modern management fails to allow the winter weight loss to take place which results in horses being overweight.

Obesity increases the risk of laminitis, equine metabolic syndrome and musculoskeletal injury.

Identifying what is a healthy weight and body condition and monitoring changes, is essential for owners to better manage their horses appropriately.
