Equine Perinatology – EVJ supplement just released online

To honour Dr Peter Rossdale's contribution to equine perinatology, EVJ has published a supplement on the topic which has just become available online. The supplement contains a series of state-of-the art reviews on perinatal development, pathology, endocrinology and nutriton together with a large collection of research and clinical articles. Together this represents an important body of evidence that will inform the practice of equine neonatology for years to come. Of particular importance are large scale multicentre studies documenting the importance of blood lactate concentrations as a prognostic indicator and showing that prophylactic antiulcer medications may increase the risk of diarrhoea. For the first time, the impact of hospital treatment as a foal on future sales performance has been reported by Dr Keven Corley and his study shows that previously hospitalised foals are not at a disadvantage when compared to other animals brought to public auction. The supplement was generously sponsored by the BEVA T ...

Woman and Horse left dead after Hyperbaric Chamber Explosion

While Florida fire authorities probe the cause of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber explosion that killed one horse and one woman and injured another woman, an equine veterinarian who founded a hyberbaric-oxygen-therapy-focused veterinary society said practitioners strive to minimize risk associated with the technology. According to published reports, on Feb. 10, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber exploded at the Kentucky Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center (KESMARC) in Ocala, Fla., when a horse inside the chamber began kicking. The horse and a woman were killed in the incident. Another woman sustained injuries, the reports said. Marion County, Fla., fire rescue officials are investigating the cause of the incident. A representative from KESMARC Florida was unavailable for comment.   Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves treating a patient with 100% oxygen under pressure; veterinarians have explained the process increases oxygen levels in blood plasma and promotes higher delivery to all body tissues, ...

WNV vector found in UK

A species of mosquito suspected of transmitting West Nile Virus to humans in Europe has been discovered in the marshes of north Kent and south Essex. West Nile virus (WNV) lives primarily in birds. Humans and horses occasionally catch it from the bite of a mosquito that has previously fed on an infected bird or animal. Though it can cause severe disease, most infections are mild or produce no symptoms. The mosquito, known only by its Latin name Culex modestus, can transmit WNV because it regularly bites both birds and mammals.  WNV has never been found in the UK and there is no known current risk to humans. Cx. modestus has not been seen in the UK since 1945, when only a handful were recorded. The mosquitoes were found by Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) and University of Oxford post-graduate student, Nick Golding.  'It is unclear how long {Culex modestus} has been breeding in the UK - the new specimens were found during field studies in 2010 and 2011 - but it seems likely that the species ha ...
