health and medicines

The BEVA Health and Medicines Committee is chaired by Mark Bowen. The committee provides support to the BEVA Board of Management and reports to Council on subjects that are likely to affect the health of the horse or affect our membership. Some recent examples include providing advice to members about responsible antimicrobial use, ensuring the profession is notified about important infectious diseases, including Equine Infectious Anaemia and Equine Herpes Virus and lobbying for changes to equine influenza vaccines. We continue to provide advice to owners regarding use of medicines in the UK and withdrawal times in competition animals and lobby the British government for the continued availability of drugs considered essential for the welfare of horses. The committee has additional responsibility for AI issues and has recently rewritten the AI code of practice and provided national guidance on contagious diseases of the reproductive tract.
