Equine dental procedures and working with Equine Dental Technicians

Many procedures involving equine teeth are within the Veterinary Surgeons Act, although some minor procedures have been deemed suitable to be performed by suitably trained technicians, or are outwith the Act.

The following resources have been published to help clarify the legality of equine dental procedures by horse owners, veterinary surgeons and equine dental technicians (EDTs). We work with the British Veterinary Dental Technician (BVDA), the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians (BAEDT) to provide these resources.

Current regulation on equine dental procedures

At present all diagnostic and treatment procedures in the horse's moth are considered to be Acts of Veterinary Surgery under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, which is regulated by the RCVS. The only exception is the manual removal of small dental overgrowths and sharp enamel points with hand instruments. Read the full regulations.

Dentistry exam

The BEVA/BVDA dental exams are run annually in conjunction with the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians, with the objective of promoting good practice amongst those practising equine dentistry. Find out more about the exam.
