The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has appointed Andy Fiske-Jackson as the new Head of RVC Equine. This service encompasses both the RVC Equine Referral Hospital and the RVC Equine Practice based near Hatfield in Hertfordshire. Together, they deliver specialist expertise and first-opinion veterinary care for horses, ponies and donkeys.
RVC Equine is recognised globally for its outstanding clinical services and contribution to evidence-based equine medicine. It’s clinical, teaching and research work informs best practice in equine health and welfare in areas such as laminitis, poor performance treatments and surgical techniques. It supports the training of undergraduate veterinary students and equine vet specialists-in-training.
As Head of RVC Equine, Andy will provide strategic leadership for both the Equine Referral Hospital and the Equine Practice. As well as supporting the delivery of exceptional clinical services, he will oversee the education and professional development of students and help shape future research and innovation across the department.
Andy has a long and distinguished association with the RVC, which began in 2008 when he joined as a Resident in Equine Surgery. During his specialist training, he obtained the European College of Veterinary Surgeons Diploma in Equine Surgery and completed the RVC’s Master of Veterinary Medicine. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in recognition of his teaching excellence in higher education.
Throughout his time with the RVC, Andy has also held several senior clinical and academic roles, including Staff Clinician, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in Equine Surgery; he took on the role of Deputy Head of RVC Equine in 2019. Andy will continue to treat referred patients and further his research, particularly in relation to diagnostic techniques for digital flexor tendon sheath injuries, clinical applications of objective gait analysis and treatment of poor performance cases. He will also continue his teaching role to support the next generation of equine veterinarians.
