News Council Updates Health and Medicines Committee BEVA News
01 Mar 2024 BEVA

Bruce Bladon provides an update on topics discussed in the Health and Medicines Committee meeting on 29 February.

Firstly, Jenny Hall presented on behalf of the FEI on the process of listing drugs on the FEI Clean Sport app. Medicines are reviewed annually, starting on 1 March, being ratified at the FEI board meeting in September. If you believe there are any medicines that should be included on the list, either as banned or tolerated substances, you can contact us. We will invite the membership to contact us with suggestions in the Autumn.

The majority of discussion in the meeting surrounded the use and monitoring of antibiotics. The Committee discussed the use of data collected by the monitoring systems, such as that of the RCVS Knowledge. RCVS Knowledge are looking to utilise practice management systems to collect this data automatically, please get in touch if you work with a practice management system and would be happy to trial this.

Lastly, the Committee discussed the progress of the CANTER project with full guidelines likely to be published in June. Regulations have tighted up for significantly qualified persons (SQPs) and in particular they will need to keep comprehensive records as veterinary surgeons do.
