Dates: 25th August - 6th September 2024
Duration: Two weeks
Location: Meru Animal Welfare Organisation (MAWO), Meru, Tanzania
BEVA Trust is looking for two volunteers; vets and vet nurses to travel to Tanzania to support Meru Animal Welfare Organisation (MAWO).
Meru Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO) was founded in 2010 with the aim of promoting and improving the welfare of donkeys and other animals. The organization is inspired by the vision that animals should be respected as living creatures that experience pain, fear, and suffering. Its mission is to protect all animals from torture, abuse, cruelty, diseases, and painful killing. It achieves this mission through community-centred approaches and interventions. Including public education on animal welfare and health, delivery of basic veterinary services to grassroots communities through mobile clinics. Working with formal learning institutions (including tertiary institutions/colleges) to promote positive behaviour change about animal welfare and equipping donkey owners, community members, paravets and veterinary medicine students with necessary skills and knowledge on care and treatment of animals, including donkeys.
The volunteers will work alongside the small MAWO team to deliver donkey mobile clinics; which aim to treat sick donkeys, immunise against endemic disease as such Anthrax, Tetanus and Rabies as well as worming, hoof trimming and eye care. The two veterinary volunteers will help to give advice to donkey owners, support donkey champions program, distribute donkey welfare manuals to rural communities and give demonstrations and workshops for community leaders and donkey owners. Volunteers will also deliver practical sessions on equine welfare for final year students at Tengreru Livestock college.
Accommodation and meals will be provided at Vets Africa Homestay. Volunteers will need to be able to work comfortably without access to many diagnostic aids and must be prepared to try to understand the local culture and customs. An interest in tropical medicine and an open mind would be an advantage.
