Course description
Day one initially will concentrate on raising the foal for future performance and assessing and reacting to conformational issues. Talks will be given by a surgical specialist, a veterinary researcher, a farrier and a stud manager, providing an all round perspective of managing these cases. The programme will move on to cover airway assessment, surgical options and prognosis, and then both OCD and CVM in young horses. An in-depth sales radiography panel will discuss the importance of radiographic findings, both from a sales and future performance point of view. The first day will conclude with talks on nutrition, both at the herd level and also in the individual.
The second day will start with the very important topic of parasite problems and the use of anthelmintics. Delegates will be given detailed talks from world renowned leaders in this field on topics including diagnostics in worm control, pasture and non-anthelmintic control strategies and anthelmintic resistance, along with practical advice on formulating a parasite control programme suitable for youngstock. A case discussion will follow on the management of a recent outbreak. The programme will move onto the medical management of the older foal, weanling and yearling, with topics including respiratory and gastrointestinal disease, the gut microbiome and a case based discussion on endocarditis, weight loss and respiratory conditions in the individual sick animal.
Who should attend
The course is suitable for any veterinary surgeon with an interest in youngstock management and would be of particular interest to those working towards an RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice in Equine Stud Medicine.
