Supporting Champions: Drugs in Equestrian Sport

A day of expert speakers and panel discussions on drugs, doping and medication control in equestrian sport. The speakers are veterinary surgeons involved in drug control policy, official veterinary surgeons acting at competitions and veterinary surgeons making day to day decisions on the use of medication in competition horses. Practical advice on forms and procedures as well as ethical concepts will be discussed.

About the course

The course will discuss:

Medication control in the racehorse including a review of international racing standards for medication control, governance surrounding drugs and doping. We will cover how testing of horses is carried out at home and at the racecourse, and how the results are interpreted. What influences the likelihood of a positive test result and what does testing positive mean?

Medication control in the sport horse as compared to the racehorse, including the role of the FEI veterinarian and the FEI/ international governance surrounding drugs and doping. The process of testing at home and at competition will be covered, and the interpretation of those results. What does the future hold for drugs in competitive equestrian sport?

Practicalities of Medication Provision to the Competition Horse including the role of the practising vet, team vet, treating vet and official vet. Treating the horse in the run up to a competition – forms, processes, declarations. What to do when an emergency occurs and what medications are permitted? What to do if you realise you have made a mistake? What drug use is legal and how to avoid accidental contamination?

Integrity and Anti-doping in the Racehorse will describe integrity processes within BHA and in comparison to other major racing jurisdictions. The antidoping rules will be reviewed and we will look to the future of antidoping rules for racehorses in the UK.

Ethical Issues Surrounding Gene Editing and Doping in Equestrian Sport.

Towards the end of the course, there will also be a panel discussion involving all speakers.

1. Have an increased awareness of what medication uses are legal in performance horses
2. Understand how samples for dope testing are taken, and interpreted and the consequences of testing positive
3. Have the ability to debate the ethical issues surrounding drugs in equestrian sport

  • If you book a place on a BEVA CPD course and are unable to attend due to any Covid-19 related issue you will receive a credit for the amount you paid. This credit can be used for any BEVA CPD and will be valid for a year from the date of issue. Please contact us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend a course.
  • If BEVA are required to cancel or postpone a course for any reason, you can opt to receive a full refund or receive a credit for a future BEVA CPD course (valid for a year from the date of issue).
  • A full refund will be made, less a 10% administration charge, if cancellation is more than 6 weeks before the start of the course
  • A refund cannot be guaranteed if cancellation is less than 6 weeks before the start of the course. A refund will be made if BEVA can resell the place, less a 20% administration charge. 
  • Booked places can be transferred to another person free of charge. If the transferee is not a BEVA member they will be liable for the difference between the member and non-member rate.
  • All delegates must have appropriate liability and professional indemnity insurance. 
  • Delegates must bring appropriate safety wear (coveralls, hard hats, boots etc) to courses involving practical sessions.
  • BEVA may pass contact details of delegates to the organisers or sponsors of the course unless the delegate has specified otherwise.
  • All delegates self-certify that they are a qualified veterinary surgeon or veterinary nurse and qualified to undertake the procedures being taught. Where the delegate is in training for such a qualification BEVA must be made aware of their training status at the time of booking.
