About the course
The idea is that you will come away with some enhanced skills for suturing. You will be shown when to close a wound, how to close it and with what. You will be taught tension-relieving suture patterns and techniques, along with good bandaging techniques and also how and when a cast/bandage cast should be applied. We will also discuss what dressings to use when – this will be a practical discussion of what you can use in the field for any situation.
We will also go through synoviocentesis methods for the coffin joints, fetlocks, digital flexor tendon sheath, carpal, and tarsocrural joints.
We will use live horses for bandaging, splinting, casting and topographical teaching complemented with cadaver specimens for demonstrating nerve blocking techniques, synoviocentesis approaches and wound management/suturing.
We will create some case scenarios that you can work through, these will be:
Eyelid lacerations
Lip/muzzle lacerations
Fractured splint bone with a large wound
Wounds over high motion joints with tissue deficits
Heel bulb laceration
Wound over tendon sheath with possible involvement
There will also be a period of time for discussion surrounding some cases, what to do and when and any specifics that candidates wish to learn about.
What will I learn?
By the end of the course you will...
1. Have confidence to make good clinical decision-making with wounds
2. Have consolidated your practical skills in suturing, bandaging, splinting, casting, nerve blocking and synoviocentesis
3. Be able to identify cases that require a referral and the ones that can be readily treated in the owner's yard
