FULLY BOOKED: PPE for the Sports Horse - Feet and Lower Limbs - What's OK and What's Not?

Are you an experienced vet who is vetting sports horses? If so, this course is for you! This course aims to look at the radiography of some of the more thorny areas of vettings in sports horses. What are your criteria for passing and failing when looking at radiographs? How consistent are we across the profession? Could we do better? During this course, we will focus on the lower limbs - specifically the foot and hocks.

Course dates

27 Nov 2023 09:00 - 27 Nov 2023 17:00

DoubleTree by Hilton (Bristol), Redcliffe Way, BS1 6NJ

About the course

This course aims to dig into the myth, conflict and art of more advanced-level PPE. We expect that delegates will be confident in carrying out PPEs and regularly doing so. This course looks at the next level- image interpretation and it’s importance and value in interpretation in light of the purchase requirements and clinical findings.

This course will not give you a yes/no tick list as each vetting, potential purchaser, horse and purchase use is different and unique, but we do aim to open up the discussion and provide those on the ground making the decisions with a clearer framework and understanding to build confidence in making those decisions.

Specifically, this course will focus on the interpretation of images for PPE of sports and pleasure horses. It will focus on image interpretation of the foot, pastern metacarpus and metatarsus and tarsus, and linking that image interpretation to the potential workload of a pleasure horse or low to advanced-level sports horses. Finalising the day will be a discussion about what could potentially be classed as ‘suitable for purchase’ and what is less likely to be ‘suitable for purchase’, and tips on how to make your decision on the ground.

With the aim of covering navicular bone, proximal suspensory area and distal tarsal joints, this promises to be a lively and highly applicable discussion to all those in sports horse practice.

This course can be booked separately to its sibling; 'PPE in the sports horse: neck, back and stifle', however, you can book both days together at a discounted rate. There will also be the opportunity for you to attend an optional evening meal – a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues and enjoy some downtime, making this a social as well as discussion-based CPD. Prices for the evening meal will be confirmed shortly.

What will I learn?

By the end of the course you will...
1. Be able to identify non-diagnostic images and correct common errors to produce diagnostic images.
2. Be able to identify common pathology and feel confident in assessing the significance of the pathology given the required use.
3. Feel confident deciding whether a horse is ‘fit for purpose’.
4. Be able to discuss your reasoning behind this decision with your client based on current science and expert opinion.

Did you know you can book the sister course 'PPE for the Sports Horse - Stifle, Back and Neck - What’s OK, What’s Not?' at a discounted rate if you book both days? Click here to book.
