Dick Vet Equine Practice
One of our lovely colleagues is pregnant and we are looking for an ambulatory vet to fill her considerable shoes for 14 months on a 0.8 FTE basis! We are a friendly, close knit team at the foot of the picturesque Pentland Hills on the outskirts of Edinburgh. This ideal location offers you the best of all worlds: if the wonderful city of Edinburgh itself isn’t enough of a draw, you can be in the Highlands within a couple of hours, there are excellent rail links both North and South, and Edinburgh International Airport is only a stone’s throw away. We are an ambulatory practice with responsibility for teaching final years on rotation, but with easy access to the facilities and expertise of the referral Dick Vet Equine Hospital.
In return for a cheerful disposition and good work ethic, we can offer you:
- Full time hours of 9-5 (and truly those hours, few late finishes or early starts required) 5 days per week
- On call rota currently 1:6, and all shifts and out of hours work attracts extra pay
- OOH vet is kept free for late afternoon emergencies, meaning everyone else can get away on time
- 8 weeks holiday per year
- Salary UoE grade 8 (£50,253-£61,759) plus 10% clinical supplement, plus on call remuneration averaging £5k
- Cake Fridays – provided by students so you never need to contribute!
The day to day of the job is much as you would expect for any ambulatory practice, but with a little extra time allowed on each call for teaching purposes and the added bonus of final years to carry your kit for you! The work is predominantly pleasure horses and sports horses, with occasional stud work. We work closely with the referral team in the hospital, and can work up cases using their facilities with their guidance if required, but also have well trained clients who are, on the whole, happy to refer cases in. We have our own toys we use as standard – DR, ultrasound, gastroscope, endoscope, motorised dental kit, etc – and also have access to hospital kit when required.
As well as taking students on their rotations in final year, there is also the opportunity to deliver more formal teaching to the younger years. On the whole our students are a great bunch and really enjoy their time spent with us in the practice.
Other salient points of the job include:
- Work vehicles provided
- USS pension scheme
- Yearly salary progression
- Pro-rata formal CPD allowance
- Unlimited professional development allowance within the hospital as appropriate
- Access to Edinburgh University facilities
