To honour Dr Peter Rossdale's contribution to equine perinatology, EVJ has published a supplement on the topic which has just become available online.

The supplement contains a series of state-of-the art reviews on perinatal development, pathology, endocrinology and nutriton together with a large collection of research and clinical articles. Together this represents an important body of evidence that will inform the practice of equine neonatology for years to come.

Of particular importance are large scale multicentre studies documenting the importance of blood lactate concentrations as a prognostic indicator and showing that prophylactic antiulcer medications may increase the risk of diarrhoea. For the first time, the impact of hospital treatment as a foal on future sales performance has been reported by Dr Keven Corley and his study shows that previously hospitalised foals are not at a disadvantage when compared to other animals brought to public auction.

The supplement was generously sponsored by the BEVA Trust and Beaufort Cottage Educational Trust. BEVA members can access this for free when logged in.
