We are sad to share that Lode De Smet MRCVS, 2021 winner of the BEVA Equine Welfare award died suddenly on 29th April 2022.

Originally from Belgium Lode had been a partner at Gibson & Jones veterinary surgeons in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Wales for the last 20 years. He dedicated his time to improving equine welfare and undertook all RSPCA equine welfare work in South Wales, dealing with over 500 cases.

His passion for the care and welfare of horses in South Wales extended to providing personal rehab. With many cases unfit to travel, he would happily take them home to provide further rehabilitation. His casework was often very long, hard, cold and stressful but he never complained.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
