Full Course Programme
Course Description: This course, timed to follow directly after Hands-On Equine Cardiology, is designed to teach veterinary surgeons how to scan the horse’s heart. Delegate numbers for this long-running and highly-popular course are kept small to ensure maximum exposure to case material. Please register early to avoid disappointment as this course always sells out. The programme covers recognition of normal cardiac anatomy, common cardiac abnormalities and measurement of intracardiac dimensions. An introduction to Doppler echocardiography will also be included, with practical tuition in the use of these advanced imaging modalities. The course aims to help vets make maximum use of their ultrasound technology to aid diagnosis and prognosis for horses with cardiac disease, making it particularly valuable to equine practitioners with ultrasound facilities who are considering extending their use into cardiology. It will also be of interest to veterinary surgeons preparing for the RCVS certificate or diploma in cardiology. The course is suitable for both absolute beginners and more experienced ultrasonographers and you will be grouped according to experience for the practical sessions. Delegates will spend 3 hours receiving practical tuition in cardiac ultrasound, using a variety of different ultrasound systems. There will be a maximum delegate/demonstrator ratio of 3:1 for all practical sessions and groups will be organised according to delegates’ ultrasound experience. Normal horses will be used in the morning session, whilst the afternoon session will concentrate on horses with abnormalities and the use of advanced imaging techniques. Key Learning Objectives: • Learn how to acquire standardised images of the equine heart • Understand the pathophysiology of cardiac disease • Learn how to recognise common cardiac abnormalities • Acquire key practical skills in equine cardiac ultrasonography using the technology in clinical patients • Understand how to optimise the use of echocardiography in your clinical practice RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Cardiology (DVC) candidates can attend for the reduced BEVA Member rate. Please contact the BEVA Office to book your place. Fee: BEVA Members £340 Non-Members £680
