About the course

Our Fundamentals of Radiography & Ultrasound combines online learning and a practical day to ensure you are competent in first-level diagnostic imaging both in the field and in the clinic.

Before attending the practical day, you will have access to over 10 lectures. Your lectures will cover the basic physics of radiology, radiography and ultrasound in the field, interpreting radiographs, imaging the stifle, radiography of the foot and when to refer.

The practical day will give you the opportunity to take part in small group rotations to practice the techniques and develop your ability to interpret the images of commonly examined areas of the horse. You will take radiographs of the foot, fetlock, carpus, hock and stifle as well as ultrasound the palmar/plantar soft tissues of the metacarpal/metatarsal fetlock and pastern regions.

The online learning will be available to access at least three weeks before the practical and available for up to 12 months afterwards.

What will I learn?

By the end of the course you will...
1. Understand how to get the most out of your equipment, avoid common mistakes and trouble-shoot in the field
2. Understand how to acquire routine radiographs of the distal limbs, knees, hocks and stifles
3. Understand how to acquire routine radiographs of the DDFT, SDFT, ALDDFT, and SL
4. Be able to interpret normal and abnormal findings on radiographs and ultrasound of the above areas, including identification of artefacts
5. Be able to confidently recognise when advanced diagnostic imaging modalities are indicated and when to refer

Excellent run through of essential skills for first opinion and hospital work. A perfect balance of basic knowledge and some more advance information.
