book iconAbout the Course

Working as an equine veterinarian is one of the most dangerous civilian profession to be employed within, with the majority of injuries a direct result of the horses behaviour. However, these are normal behavioural responses to an acute stressor for this species. This course will give you a practical understanding of how learning theory can be employed to develop a safer and less stressful working relationship with your patients. Furthermore, we will begin to explore how to investigate the horse that presents with unwanted ridden behaviour. Is it due to pain, behaviour or both.

thinking iconKey Learning Objectives

  • Enhance your understanding of equine ethology and its significance to veterinary care
  • Develop your understanding of the processes through which horses learn
  • Learn how to apply a knowledge of learning theory to increase compliance and reduce stress when treating equines
  • Gain hands-on experience in clicker training horses
  • Build confidence in your ability to read the warning signs that a horse may react adversely, reducing the likelihood of injury
  • Confidently perform low stress clinical procedures
  • Learn how to determine if poor performance and unwanted ridden behaviours are due to pain, behaviour or both.
