Job Description

The roles and responsibilities of the position will include the following, training can be provided where needed:

• Stock Control – ensure functional level of stock (consumables, drugs and equipment). Maintain accurate records of semen and embryo storage and movements. Liaise with drugs companies and buying groups to ensure that the most cost efficient stock format.

• Sterilising Equipment – ensure that all necessary equipment is sterilised according to protocol and that only authorised persons are sterilising equipment.

• Semen processing, semen freezing and frozen semen handling – includes processing and preparation for in-house use, freezing semen, shipping to UK and export to EU countries (chilled and frozen), ordering semen. Ensuring results for semen shipments are received.  Keeping statistics and results up to date for stallions.

• Laboratory Cleanliness, Biosecurity and Test Compliance – cleanliness of the laboratories and associated areas as well as all the materials and equipment.  Ensure that Biosecurity is maintained and adhered to at all times.  Ensuring that all horses entering the centre have the necessary test compliance. 

• Paperwork and Record Keeping including inspections and audit – keeping all records, test results, paperwork, shipment documentation is accurate, present and filed correctly.  Ensuring further actions (e.g. further tests, regular tests) are organised and scheduled. Ensuring various spreadsheets are up to date.  Responsible for preparation, implementation, management and follow-up actions are completed of all audits, stock takes and externals audits, e.g. the VMD Inspection, APHA inspection

• Equipment Maintenance, Servicing and Repairs – ensuring veterinary equipment is maintained and serviced as necessary. 

• Assisting Vets and other laboratory work – as training and time allows.

Company Information

Tomlinson Equine is based at Elmleaze and consists of a veterinary practice and stud.  The two organisations run very closely together.  The organisations specialise in both resident stud and veterinary services, and ambulatory veterinary services, mainly focussing on performance horse medicine and specialist equine reproduction.  Tomlinson Equine is an APHA approved semen and embryo collection centre and has an established working system with specific protocols, APHA regulations and task lists that must be worked within.
