The BEVA/BVDA Dentistry Exam

run in conjunction with the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians (BAEDT)

The dental exam aims to promote good practice amongst those practising equine dentistry and promote the professional training of Equine Dental Technicians (EDTs). The exam follows a rigorous process of examination that should not be undertaken lightly. Candidates must demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and competency in set procedures and application for the exam should be made following extensive training and experience.

The exam consists of three elements:

  • Application and assessment of credentials*
  • Theoretical Element ("spot" examination and cadaver skull charting)**
  • Practical ("Clinical") Examination

The exam is open to trainee Equine Dental Technicians who have undergone structured training in approved circumstances; this includes training under the direct supervision of a BAEDT member or direct certified supervision under a veterinary surgeon with dentistry expertise, courses for EDTs run by BEVA and/or the BAEDT and previous attendance/completion of the degree course in Equine Dental Studies at Hartpury. Other training providers may be approved, although this should be clarified before submission of credentials. Fully qualified veterinary surgeons are also eligible to sit the exam.
