Following the advice of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, the Government has decided to reclassify ketamine as a Class B drug. This is likely to result in ketamine being reclassified as a Schedule 2 drug, although the Home Office have indicated that they will consult with the veterinary sector on the impact of these restrictions.

A survey conducted by BEVA in 2013 indicated that equine vets are already compliant with the RCVS advice that ketamine should be stored in a locked cupboards and its use recorded; in effect already being compliant with this recommendation.

We have highlighted contradictory advice between recommendations from the BVA and VMD on the storage of schedule 2 drugs in vehicles and will continue to push for further clarrification as part of this consultation.
