It has been brought to our attention that some animal owners are purchasing drugs that BEVA members recommend for the treatment of their animals via the internet from outside of the European Community.
It is illegal for owners or trainers to import drugs in this manner into Europe, even if they can be obtained without prescription in the country where they are purchased. It is the clients who are acting illegally. Members are encouraged to draw this fact to the attention of their clients and to provide specific details to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) if this practice persists.
The VMD are aware of the allegations and introduced their Accredited Internet Retailer Scheme earlier this year to identify organisations that have been inspected against the UK's Veterinary Medicines Regulations.
