Orthopaedic emergencies in horses are common occurrences and require a calm and confident approach to the injured horse and its owner/trainer. Often the equine practitioner has to take life-saving decisions and initiate critical treatments on the spot in order to give the horse a fighting chance. This 2-day practical course has been developed to equip veterinarians from mixed and equine practice with the required knowledge and the practical skills to examine injured horses and to carry out state-of-the-art therapy. This course very much focusses on decision-making in an equine orthopaedic emergency situation. Over the two days most orthopaedic emergency scenarios and how such cases can be approached will be extensively discussed and trained on live horses and specimens. The management of acute and chronic wounds, including skin grafting techniques will also be covered. In the mornings the following topics will be covered through highly illustrated lectures and case presentations (in English, with Hungarian translation): Orthopaedic First Aid – Acute blood loss, non-weightbearing lameness, the collapsed horse, rescue techniques etc. Fractures = euthanasia? Splinting & Casting – General Indications & Techniques Wound Dressings – Does it really matter which one I choose? Approach and Management of Acute Wounds – To repair or not to repair? Synovial Sepsis – Decision Making & Therapies Lacerations involving tendons & bones Non-Weightbearing Lameness / Solar Penetrations Approach and Management of Chronic Wounds – Whats new? Skin Grafting Techniques – Can cosmetic outcomes be achieved? Open and frank discussions are encouraged during the dedicated question times and the speakers will share their personal experiences (successes and failures) with attendees. In the afternoons, the 7 hours of practical sessions will give attendees the opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses and equine specimens and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 attendees), all under the supervision of the specialists. The following practical sessions will be covered during the course, including stations where attendees can present difficult first aid cases, wound repair challenges and discuss them with the other attendees and the instructor: Splinting & Casting Techniques Wound Repair Workshop Case Discussions – Difficult First Aid Cases presented by attendees (5 min presentations) Synovial Sepsis – Joint Lavage Techniques Skin Grafting Techniques Wound Repair Challenges – Cases presented by attendees (5 min presentations) The course fee includes lunches at a restaurant, coffee/tea breaks, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. On the evening of the first day all attendees are invited to attend the wine & cheese reception. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available. This course is suitable for RCVS Modules: B-EP.3; C-E.4; C-E.5; C-E.6; C-E.7; C-E.15; C-E.17
