Course Description:
A day course discussing important internal medicine topics, and learning the skills of abdominal ultrasound, liver biopsy, endoscopy and sampling of the guttural pouches and performing a tracheal wash and BAL. These are valuable skills essential for vets seeing horses in general practice. Pre-course online learning will allow for emphasis on the day to be placed on the practical skills required. A tour of Liphook Equine Hospital and Laboratory will be available after the course.

Format:
Pre-course online learning to be completed prior to the day, to include how to investigate endocrinopathic laminitis, when and how to take samples from the respiratory system (guttural pouches, tracheal wash, bronchoalveolar lavage), and when and how to take a liver biopsy.

Morning Lectures will cover case-based discussion of common endocrine presentations and how to interpret results, how to investigate liver disease, dealing with Strangles, and how to investigate allergic airway disease. Afternoon Practicals will consist of teaching in the following areas with live horses or cadavers:
- Tracheal wash and BAL – live horses and plucks
- Examination and sampling of the guttural pouch - cadavers
- Abdominal ultrasound – live horses

  • Cancellation less than 6 weeks prior to the start of the course: No refunds can be guaranteed, but if BEVA can resell the place a refund will be made less a 20% administrative charge.
  • Transfer of Delegate: Booked places can be transferred to another person. If the transferee is not a BEVA Member he/she will be liable for the difference between the Member and Non-Member delegate rates.
  • Insurance: All delegates must have appropriate liability and professional indemnity insurance.
  • Safety: Delegates must bring appropriate safety wear (coveralls, hard hats, boots etc) to courses involving practical sessions.
