BEVA/BARTA large animal rescue courses provide essential training in how to work with the emergency services as part of an equine rescue team.

BEVA has been at the forefront of developing (Large Animal) Equine Rescue procedures with the Fire & Rescue Services.  BEVA is collaborating with BARTA (the British Animal Rescue & Trauma Care Association), to provide two one-day workshops in 2017 exclusively for BEVA Members. 

The first one-day workshop will take place on Thursday 25th May. In preparation for the workshop, there will be an online eLearning element that will need to be completed before the full day practical. The eLearning will commence, exactly 4 weeks prior to the workshop, on Thursday 27th April. The latest delegates are able to register for this course is 2 weeks before (Wednesday 10th May) but delegates must be aware that the online learning element must be completed within this time frame) .

This is an exciting new course that has been constructed by the British Animal Rescue and Trauma Care Association (BARTA) in partnership with BEVA. The course has been developed to equip equine vets with the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to be an effective responder to equine emergencies and other incidents involving horses.

The Fire and Rescue Service attend around 5,000 equine incidents nationally each year – everything from road traffic incidents through to horses stuck in river, ditches and bogs – and call for veterinary assistance for every incident to provide optimum personnel safety and animal welfare. Knowing what to do, and what not to do, when attending equine emergencies is therefore essential for all equine practitioners and this course has been carefully constructed to meet these needs. The course is benchmarked against the national training standards of the Fire and Rescue Service and delivers structured training in triage, tactical planning, sedation and anaesthesia, first aid, casualty management, resuscitation and euthanasia, focussing on what is different at rescue scenes compared to everyday practice.

The course uses innovative learning methods to ensure the best possible delegate experience and value for money. Instead of wasting valuable face-to-face course time with lectures, all of the essential foundation information is delivered via structured on-line learning with tutor, chatroom support and self-assessment. The one-day face-to-face course is a rich practical learning experience in which delegates take part in eight challenging rescue scenarios covering the full range of emergencies commonly encountered when working with the emergency services. Each scenario is well illustrated with videos and photographs and the day is spent in role play working with the animal rescue team leader to resolve the incident. Built on the success of the previous BEVA pilot courses in equine rescue, four years of development and listening to the needs of vets and the emergency services, this course provides a unique opportunity to build your skills in this critically important area.

Completion of the course leads to the award of the BARTA Veterinary Responder (BARTA Veterinary Large Animal Rescue - Level Two) qualification and fulfils the requirements of the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme Awards. Don’t miss the opportunity!

• Cancellation less than 6 weeks prior to the start of the course: No refunds can be guaranteed, but if BEVA can resell the place a refund will be made less a 20% administrative charge.
• Transfer of Delegate: Booked places can be transferred to another person. If the transferee is not a BEVA Member he/she will be liable for the difference between the Member and Non-Member delegate rates.
• Insurance: All delegates must have appropriate liability and professional indemnity insurance.
• Safety: Delegates must bring appropriate safety wear (coveralls, hard hats, boots etc) to courses involving practical sessions.
