Over the past twenty years the number of geriatric horses has increased exponentially as a result of significant advances in equine medicine and horse ownership having transitioned to a more emotionally-based owner-to-horse relationship. This has led to a plethora of new medical and husbandry challenges for veterinarians dealing with an aging equine population.

This two day practical course is suitable for veterinarians from mixed and equine practice who are keen to update their knowledge and skills in the fields of geriatric feeding, dentistry, medicine and orthopaedics.

In the mornings the following topics will be covered by the specialists through well-illustrated lectures and case presentations (in English, no translation but with German moderation):

How to work up the horse with weight-loss
Dentistry in the older horse
PPID & Metabolic Syndrome – Diagnostics in the older horse
PPID & Metabolic Syndrome – Treatment & Management
The geriatric Metabolism – Sedation, Anaesthesia & Devising appropriate treatment protocols
Liver Disease Investigations (incl. biopsy techniques)
Making the most of the haematology & biochemistry
Management of orthopaedic conditions – Laminitis, Osteoarthritis etc.
Feeding the elderly horse – Weight loss & obesity
Most common neoplasia & their treatment in elderly horses
Cardiopulmonary Disease in the geriatric horse
Open and frank discussions are encouraged and the speakers will share their personal experiences (successes and failures) with attendees.

In the afternoons, 7 hours of practical and case-based sessions will give attendees ample opportunity to update and develop new skills on live horses and equine specimens and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine), all under the supervision of specialists. Each attendee will rotate through the following practical and case-based sessions:

Abdominal Ultrasound to identify causes of liver & weight loss problems etc. (incl. biopsy techniques)
Dental Techniques in the older horse
Endocrine Case-Discussions
Ophthalmologic Procedures – Nerve blocks, lavage system placement, keratotomy, aqueocentesis etc.
