About the Course

This is the practical part of the course. The aim of the day is focus on ‘how to’ using small groups with experienced practitioners delivering 1 to 1 teaching of how to manage wounds, diagnose septic joints and suturing techniques. We will use live horses for bandaging, splinting, casting and topographical teaching complemented with cadaver specimens for demonstrating nerve blocking techniques, synoviocentesis approaches and wound management/suturing. We will also create case scenarios using cadavers that you will work through and be shown how best to manage in the field.

We will also go through synoviocentesis methods for the coffin joints, fetlocks, digital flexor tendon sheath, carpal joints and tarsocrural joint.

We will use live horses for bandaging, splinting, casting and topographical teaching complemented with cadaver specimens for demonstrating nerve blocking techniques, synoviocentesis approaches and wound management/suturing.

We will create some case scenarios that you can work through, these will be:

1. Eyelid laceration

2. Nasal laceration

3. Lip/muzzle lacerations

4. Fractured splint bone with a large wound

5. Wounds over high motion joints with tissue deficits

6. Heel bulb laceration

7. Wound over tendon sheath with possible involvement

There will also be a period of time for discussion surrounding some cases, what to do and when and any specifics that candidates wish to learn about. .

 

Key Learning Objectives

• Confidence in good clinical decision making with wounds.
• Consolidate practical skills in suturing, bandaging, splinting, casting, nerve blocking and synoviocentesis.
• Identification of the case that requires referral and the ones that can be readily treated on the owner’s yard.

	"This course is extremely good for both recent graduates and also vets that have been graduated a bit longer. The topics covered were extremely relevant in first opinion practice. There are some scenarios, in particular haemorrhagic shock, I have never experienced and would have really struggled to deal with before going to this course. I now think I have a good understanding of the basic principles that should be prioritised in these scenarios. The practical sessions in the afternoon were extremely useful, I particularly enjoyed the bandaging practical as I asked some very basic questions and wasn't made to feel embarrassed and incompetent!"

Who is the course for?

The course is designed for newly qualified Vets, it is part of our Fundamentals programme. It would also be suitable for those who want to refresh their knowledge.

• Cancellation more than 6 weeks prior to the start of the course: A refund will be made less a 10% administrative charge.
• Cancellation less than 6 weeks prior to the start of the course: No refunds can be guaranteed, but if BEVA can resell the place a refund will be made less a 20% administrative charge.
• Transfer of Delegate: Booked places can be transferred to another person. If the transferee is not a BEVA Member he/she will be liable for the difference between the Member and Non-Member delegate rates.
• Insurance: All delegates must have appropriate liability and professional indemnity insurance.
• Safety: Delegates must bring appropriate safety wear (coveralls, hard hats, boots etc) to courses involving practical sessions.
