From Superfoods to Supplements: how to know more than the owner and feed your clinical cases to optimise recovery

24 Jul 2018 - 24 Jul 2018
09:00 - 17:00

Mercure Newbury Elcot Park Hotel,
Newbury,
RG20 8NJ

New for 2018 and by request, BEVA have developed this one day course which is suitable for all veterinary surgeons whether in ambulatory practice or a hospital setting.

Getting the feeding right is the cornerstone of almost every case we see in veterinary practice whether it’s a conversation with an owner about their overweight horse, examining a geriatric horse with weight loss or formulating parenteral nutrition for an intensive care case. In many instances owners seek their advice from fellow horse owners and the internet and this can lead to inappropriate feeding and a tack room crammed full of a plethora of supplements. This course will put you ahead by knowing more than the owner and helping them choose wisely to maximise their horse’s health.

In the human hospital environment, malnutrition has been shown to impact on the incidence of clinical complications, frequency of readmission, quality of wound healing, length of hospital stay and mortality. Many of these factors are applicable to an equine hospital setting and the care of both medical and surgical cases. We will show you how to approach the refluxing post-surgical colic, the hyperlipaemic pony with anorexia and the dysphagic horse including enteral and parenteral nutrition, tube feeding and ideas to stimulate appetite. The course concludes with discussion groups involving all of the speakers focusing on complex cases such as the orphan foal, liver failure and refeeding the emaciated horse, the perfect opportunity to get involved and ask the experts.
