About the Course
The course will cover sedation and field anaesthesia required for common field surgery such as castration, both in theory and in a practical session. Nerve blocks and regional anaesthesia for other common procedures will also be covered on cadavers - giving confidence in non-GA management of cases for further treatment- eg placing of lavage systems, blocking to allow suturing of distal wounds etc.
This course aims to give you the confidence to lead field castration under GA and also understand why some GAs go smoother than others, and how to get the best possible outcome for the GA and surgery.
As you will be anaesthetising and operating on live colts we do require that the prelearning for this course is completed prior to the course. This is to keep you, colts, and staff as safe as possible.
Key Learning Objectives
- Understand when and in which cases field anaesthesia is an appropriate choice.
- Refresh/update your knowledge on different sedative drug regimens and doses.
- Demonstrate practical skills in field anaesthesia.
- Formulate a plan to perform an open colt castration.
- Understand complications of castration, ways to minimise their risk, and how to treat them.
- Review/learn other common local anaesthetic techniques.
