Job Description

The chosen candidate will be both competent and confident in all areas of stud practice, as well as basic equine general practice.


Main duties and responsibilities of the job: ability to prepare mares for live cover, chilled and frozen artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis; you should be capable of doing so with or without the assistance of transrectal ultrasound. Extensive knowledge of peri-partum mare, breeding stallion and foal medicine is essential. Further post-graduate education and training in equine theriogenology is therefore required. In addition to experience and knowledge with regards to equine reproduction, knowledge of basic equine general practice is essential; particularly with regards to out-of-hours emergency work.

Bourton Vale Equine Clinic is a 14-vet private 100% equine practice based in the Cotswolds with both a first-opinion and referral client base. Stud clients include top National Hunt, flat Thoroughbred and Sport horse studs. Facilities and equipment available for artificial insemination and embryo transfer. The clinic houses surgical and in-patient facilities with most cases carried out in-house at the clinic. Diagnostic imaging facilities include x-ray, ultrasound, gamma scintigraphy and standing MRI.

Annual salary of £35,000 with accommodation provided on-site. Out of hours rota 1-in-5 on call. 20 days holiday plus bank holidays per annum. One day in lieu of weekends on duty (to be taken outside of the stud season). 5 days CPD allowance. RCVS and BEVA membership fees paid. VDS cover provided. No vehicle provided with the position; mileage paid at standard rates. An excellent command of the English language is essential, both conversationally and professionally. Minimum of 2 year’s post-graduate experience.
