Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management and welfare of the horses at CRS, including planning for feeding, exercise, turnout, farriery and routine veterinary care. As horses are kept at the CRS for a maximum of four years, this role also includes the opportunity to source new horses and responsibility to liaise with our Thoroughbred Rehoming centre. Where necessary, re-training of new horses may be required. The BRS students are involved in the day-to-day care of our horses, and this role will include liaison with BRS staff, responsibility for student inductions to the CRS and supervision of students whilst they are working with our horses. The role will also include participation with studies which take place, including monitoring and sampling of horses.
Essential attributes include a recent background of working with horses, and an understanding of the welfare and management of racehorses and ex-racehorses. The CRS operates under a Home Office License, and the Equine Studies Technician is required to hold a Home Office Personal License - training will be provided as required. Experience in veterinary nursing or as an animal technician would be of benefit, but not a must. The following qualifications would also be beneficial, though training and support to work towards these will be provided by the BRS where necessary: 1st4Sport – Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Racehorse Care & Management and Level 3 Certificate in Education & Training.

Given the nature of the role, you must be prepared to work with a high degree of flexibility, involving working unsociable hours at times, including weekends and bank holidays. Excellent communication, organisation and horse handling skills are a must, along with the ability to work both alone with minimal supervision, and within a busy team. The successful candidate will be required to live within easy access of Newmarket.

As the needs of the business change this role will change accordingly, therefore this document should be viewed as guidelines which are subject to change. We welcome enquiries from everyone and value diversity in our workforce.
