Animal Health Plans are not a new concept in agricultural practice but as yet are not widely used in equine practice. Preventive healthcare is in keeping with the National Animal Health and Welfare Strategy launched by Defra in 2004 and more recently the draft Equine Health and Welfare Strategy lead by BEVA and written by the Horse Industry itself.
BEVA have produced a two-stage template for Horse Health planning with a view to encouraging equine practitioners to download and use.
The first is a simple tick box Horse Health Review, which should act to raise client awareness about routine healthcare of their horse. This document ends by asking the client if they would like to enter into a more detailed Annual Review and Health Plan for their horse under the guidance of their veterinary surgeon. BEVA has made it all really easy by also producing a second tick box template for the more detailed Horse Health Review and Plan.
BEVA feels that by using these downloadable forms the equine practitioner can be proactive about their involvement in the care of their client’s horse and in turn make a real difference to horse welfare.
