BEVA Trust in the Developing World

The BEVA Trust is committed to assisting vets working in the Developing World.

The Trust will shortly be funding our first CPD programme overseas in Eqypt in collaboration with Animal Care Eqypt (ACE). Patrick Pollock from the University of Glasgow will be travelling to Luxor to run a programme on 'Wound Management'.

Recent initiatives also includes working jointly with the Society of Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA - www.spana.org [1]) in the distribution of unwanted members journals to veterinary schools in Ethiopia and Syria. The Trust also provides travel awards for Developing World vets to travel to Europe to attend appropriate courses and meeting.

The Trust covers the costs of provision of expertise of BEVA members willing to travel in Developing countries to share their knowledge abroad. In September BEVA member Philip Ivens, a resident in equine internal medicine at the Royal Veterinary College, travelled to The Gambia with the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (www.gambiahorseanddonkey.org.uk [2]) to assit with the veterinary intervention in the current epidemic of African Horse Sickness. This outbreak has had devastating effects on the local population of working equids and dire socioeconomic implications for the families whose livelihoods depend on having a healthy working donkey.

The BEVA Trust Trustees were also pleased to provide sponsorship for Patrick Sells trip to Morocco. In November 2007 Patrick Sells, a newly qualified Liverpool graduate from North Wales, undertook a sponsored 3,100-mile motorcycle trip from the University of Liverpool in Leahurst to Marrakech to raise money for SPANA. Patrick worked as a volunteer vet in the Atlas Mountains for three months at the Midelt SPANA clinic, during which time he carried out a study on harness-induced injuries.
