Description:

This is a two day course that covers three important nursing units: Surgical Nursing, Theatre Practice and Anaesthesia, these units have a theoretical and practical element. The course content is based on the Equine Vet Nurse syllabus, which contains essential knowledge for
EVNs and nurses working in equine practice.

The first day will start with lectures and discussion on theatre practice and surgical nursing. The theoretical element will be based on theatre practice; including asepsis and sterilisation, the operating theatre, instruments and equipment and intra and post-operative care. This will be followed by surgical nursing; including colic, fracture repair, hernias and ruptures, thoracic and respiratory surgery, arthroscopy and laparoscopy.

The practical session in the afternoon will allow nurses to develop and practise skills in surgical team preparation, instruments, laying out instruments, gowning and gloving, suture material and needles. These will be practised with reference to the surgical cases discussed during the morning lectures.

The aim of the second day is to start with lectures and discussion on local anaesthetics, preoperative preparation, general anaesthesia; recovery and anaesthetic complications.

The practical session in the afternoon will allow individual practise with tuition and discussion for patient preparation, pre-op bloods, ET tubes, anaesthetic circuits, oxygen and ventilation, monitoring equipment and commonly used drugs for premed, sedation and anaesthesia.
