| Description: |
This is a 2 day course, consisting of two half days of lectures and two half days of practicals. Both the lectures and practical classes will be held at Rossdales Equine Hospital, Newmarket and their adjacent yards. BEVA have recognised that the Veterinary Schools have neither the time in the crowded undergraduate curriculum nor the resources to allow undergraduates to become proficient at equine dentistry. There is an increasing demand for improved equine dentistry from most equine clients, in part driven by the increasing number of equine dental technicians now practicing in Britain, including many BEVA accredited EDTs who work ethically and to a high standard. This course will cater for recently qualified vets who do not have great expertise in this area and is aimed at introducing them to the majority of equine disorders encountered in general practice. The lectures will cover clinical anatomy, physiology, developmental and acquired abnormalities of incisors and cheek teeth, dental infections, an update on manual and motorised dental equipment, dental examination techniques including dental radiography, routine prophylactic dental care (including dental rasping [floating] for performance horses) and a brief overview of dental surgical techniques. The small-group practical classes will deal with oral examination techniques with emphasis on the role of the general practitioner rather than the specialist surgeon. |
