The venue is the brand new state-of-the-art the Liverpool Arena and Conference Centre (ACC), designed by the award winning architects Wilkinson Eyre. History
The first Colic Research Symposium took place at the University of Georgia in 1982. The philosophy behind this first meeting was to bring together teams of clinicians and researchers who shared a common interest in understanding and treating equine colic. So successful was the meeting that it has been held a total of nine times since 1982 and consistently attracts speakers and delegates from all over the world. Comments from practitioners that attended the 2002 Colic Research Symposium in Manchester include: "Much to my surprise, I found the meeting relevant and hugely enjoyable." "I recommend this meeting to anyone working in equine practice."

Format
The International Colic Research Symposium is noted for providing a high quality scientific programme. The format of the meeting will be similar to that of previous symposia, with 15 minute oral presentations followed by 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Early evening drinks receptions on the 15th and 16th June will provide an opportunity to review and discuss poster presentations in an informal, convivial environment.
This is a research-focussed symposium and includes sessions on all aspects of equine gastroenterology including epidemiology, pharmacology, intestinal motility, endotoxaemia, clinical practice and post-operative survival.
This year’s plenary lecture will be delivered by Dr Soraya P. Shirazi-Beechey from the University of Liverpool, and is titled ‘ Molecular insights into dietary induced colic in the horse’
The meeting will coincide with publication of a Colic Special Issue of Equine Veterinary Journal containing full papers of some of the studies presented at the meeting.
The £200 registration fee for all three days includes the evening drinks receptions on the 15th June kindly sponsored by Merial Europe and 16th June kindly sponsored by Virbac and the symposium dinner, including pre dinner drinks and a three-course meal kindly sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim. New graduates are entitled to a reduced rate of £150 for the 3 days.
The Symposium dinner will be held on Tuesday 17th June at the fascinating Merseyside Maritime museum. Originally an old warehouse, this impressive Grade 1 listed building is located in Albert Dock on the bank of the river Mersey. John Francome MBE, seven times Champion National Hunt Jockey and now a trainer, TV commentator and novelist will be the after dinner guest speaker.
The Ninth International Equine Colic Research Symposium promises to be fun and informative with excellent opportunities to network and make new friends.
