Horse Power CPD - Raising money in support of The BEVA Trust and SPANA
Report by Prof Derek Knottenbelt
Ten senior academics and practice vets from across the country undertook a really crazy challenge for charity at the end of July, delivering over 28 hours of cutting edge CPD lectures to all 7 UK vets schools in one week on their motorcycles!
Somewhat to our surprise the whole team made it (... well mostly, temporarily lost one biker to service station restaurant food poisoning and permanently lost one bike in a high speed crash on the A14!), despite riding in the pouring rain, grappling with insane cars on the motorway, getting lost all over Oxfordshire (and Cambridgeshire, and Leicestershire) and enjoying accommodation varying from luxury spas (thank you to the amazing CRAXTON WOOD HOTEL for their generous support! http://www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/craxtonwood/ to the Newcastle Racecourse Stable lads hostel (beds perfectly long enough if you put two end to end!). The highlight possibly was riding in formation with 24 members of the Dunedin Harley Davidson Owners Group (no one dared get lost on that leg!), and lecturing in motorcycle leathers was certainly an unusual experience.
The purpose of the event was to raise essential funds for both the BEVA Trust, which supports a wide range of important equine health and welfare projects both in the UK and overseas and SPANA's Disabled Riding Centre programme in Bamako, Mali. The venues were well attended and delegates generous beyond our expectations, allowing us to get a long way towards the target of £60,000.
The donation site (http:// www.justgiving.co.uk/horsepowerCPD/2 will remain open for a while longer to enable us to reach this goal - we would all be very grateful if you could help! Donations to a genuine charity with very strict governance is satisfying and a tax advantage.. there is no reason not to donate; give us apenny for very blessing and advantage you have had since your conception and in so doing help some disabled kids who, without your help, will not get 5 pence-worth of blessings in their short and difficult lives.
