BEVA Trusts Projects Overseas

 ACE

The BEVA Trust constantly strives to improve education and training that ultimately leads to improvements in equine welfare. Over the past few years the Trust has been working closely with a number of established charities focusing on the welfare of working equids overseas.

As part of the work abroad, The Trust has been funding a CPD programme overseas in Egypt in collaboration with Animal Care Egypt (ACE). Based in Luxor the ACE centre provides free care and treatment for local animals. (ACE www.ace-egypt.org.uk)

WHWThe BEVA Trust has also donated 16,000 to World Horse Welfare's equine veterinary education programme in Romania. Project Romania is an extensive five year education programme that is raising the standard of veterinary education in Romania, through a series of expert practical courses and seminars. The programme focuses on educating those directly involved with the horse, i.e. veterinary practitioners and students, the horse owning community, farriers, saddlers and government officials who supervise and administer welfare legislation.

SPANAOver the past few years The BEVA Trust has also joined forces with the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA - www.spana.org) on a number of projects.  The journals abroad scheme was jointly launched in 2007. This scheme distributes BEVA members' unwanted copies of EVE and EVJ journals to veterinary schools and clinics in the developing world. If you are a BEVA member and are interested in donating your journals abroad please email the BEVA Trust Secretary email: jocelyn@beva.org.uk The BEVA Trust also supports vital CPD material for SPANA overseas clinical staff. Annually EVJ, The BEVA Trust and BEVA support SPANA's programme to vaccinate the working donkey population of villages in Mali against tetanus, an entirely preventable but fatal disease. Instead of sending Christmas Cards over the past two years, EVJ, The BEVA Trust, BEVA and many BEVA members have kindly donated money towards this vaccination programme.

The Trust covers the costs of provision of expertise of BEVA members willing to travel in Developing countries to share their knowledge abroad. BEVA member Philip Ivens, a resident in equine internal medicine at the Royal Veterinary College, travelled to The Gambia with the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (www.gambiahorseanddonkey.org.uk) to assist with the veterinary intervention in the current epidemic of African Horse Sickness. This outbreak has had devastating effects on the local population of working equids and dire socioeconomic implications for the families whose livelihoods depend on having a healthy working donkey.

The BEVA Trust Trustees were also pleased to provide sponsorship for Patrick Sells trip to Morocco. In November 2007 Patrick Sells, a newly qualified Liverpool graduate from North Wales, undertook a sponsored 3,100-mile motorcycle trip from the University of Liverpool in Leahurst to Marrakech to raise money for SPANA. Patrick worked as a volunteer vet in the Atlas Mountains for three months at the Midelt SPANA clinic, during which time he carried out a study on harness-induced injuries.
