BEVA Trust Practice-Based Clinical Research Award
Practice-Based Clinical Research Award
The BEVA Trust has previously supported practice-based clinical research within the Evidence Based Medicine programme initiated by BEVA Past-President Ian Camm. To date two studies have been completed the first on Colic and then more recently Laminitis. A recently initiated BEVA Trust study on castration complications is also currently being undertaken by Drs Tim Mair and Luisa Smith.
The above award has been designed to support clinical research using data generated in private practice. Graham Duncanson from Westover Veterinary Centre in Norfolk successfully applied for this award in 2008 and has begun research into "Whether regular dental treatment influences the long term dental health of the horse". Graham comments "The results of this study should be directly applicable to the majority of general equine practitioners in this country." Graham is hoping to present his findings at BEVA Congress.
Roxanne Kirton from Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Norwich successfully applied for this award in 2009 and has begun research to determine "The prevelance of Bradydysrhythmias in different breeds of horses and ponies". A report of Roxane's findings will be available to view on the webstie once the study has been completed.
To apply for the above award please fill out the attached application form. The funding will be allocated in a competitive application process. It is essential that within the application that not only are there clear indication of study objectives and study design but also that important issues of ethical approval, bio statistical support and compliance with the Animal Scientific Procedures Act (ASPA) are considered. Given that many practice-based applicants will have either limited or no direct knowledge of ASPA it is expected that application funding proposals will be submitted in collaboration with appropriate colleagues based within institutions. NB. To apply for this award you must be a current member of BEVA and have been so for longer than 12 months in duration
Application deadlines are 1st May and 1st November annually.
