We start on Friday late morning with the first of a series of multiple, short but intensive reviews of topics ranging from the pre-purchase examination to euthanasia and from colic to respiratory therapies via the acute eye and orthopaedic emergencies. These presentations concentrate on practical tips that the speakers use and also collate the relevant theory so that delegates are shown “How to…” That evening there is a trip to Glorious Goodwood for a champagne buffet at the races. Lectures continue throughout Saturday and Sunday and include a trip to the Liphook Equine Hospital for a tour and a wet lab and then a course dinner at the University on Saturday evening (with dancing at their nightclub later for the young at heart).

The registration fee (which is heavily subsidised by our sponsors) includes all lectures, notes and books, travel, coffee and meals (and most drinks!) This popular one-day equine cardiology course is being offered again in 2008. This is a practical course and covers all the commonly encountered cardiovascular abnormalities in horses. Emphasis is placed on auscultation and hands-on interpretation of clinical findings using horses brought into the racing school.

The course includes over 3 hours of practical case examination and case discussion of horses affected with common abnormalities, so please bring suitable clothing and your stethoscope. The course is ideal for equine practitioners and RCVS cardiology certificate candidates.

This course has been designed to teach veterinary surgeons how to scan the horse’s heart and follows directly after Practical Equine Cardiology. This course is being offered for the seventh year running. Delegate numbers are limited to ensure maximum exposure to case material. You are advised to register early to avoid disappointment as for the past 6 years the course has sold out.

The course covers recognition of normal cardiac anatomy, common cardiac abnormalities and measurement of intracardiac dimensions. An introduction to Doppler echocardiography will also be included, with practical tuition in the use of these advanced imaging modalities. The course should help veterinary surgeons make maximal use of their ultrasound technology to aid diagnosis and prognosis for horses with cardiac disease. The course will be suitable for veterinary surgeons in equine practice with ultrasound facilities considering extending their use into cardiology. It will also be of interest to veterinary surgeons preparing for the RCVS certificate or diploma in cardiology. The course is suitable for both absolute beginners and more experienced ultrasonographers and you will be grouped according to experience for the practical sessions.

Delegates will spend 3 hours receiving practical tuition in cardiac ultrasound, using a variety of different ultrasound systems. There will be a maximum delegate/demonstrator ratio of 3:1 for all practical sessions and groups will be arranged on arrival, based on delegates’ ultrasound experience. Normal horses will be used in the morning session, whilst the afternoon session will concentrate on horses with abnormalities and the use of advanced imaging techniques.

This course has been designed to enhance the EVN curriculum by providing an overview of conditions affecting the foal and young horse prior to starting a career as an athlete. This course is aimed at the nurse working in equine practice either as a trainee, qualified VN or EVN. Practical sessions will enable the delegate to gain some vital experience with visits to a racing yard and the Jockey Club providing a behind-the-scenes view of the racing industry. Comprehensive course notes will be provided and a course dinner is included for the Saturday night.
