Sponsored by:MERIAL ANIMAL HEALTH and EV VETERINARY PRODUCTS LTD
Venue: Willesley Equine Clinic, Tetbury, Gloucestershire
Organiser: Richard Hepburn
Fee: £275 for BEVA Members, £340 for Non-Members
COURSE LIMITED TO 12 DELEGATES PER DAY
Description:

The course is suitable for all levels of veterinarians in general and specialist equine practice. Each delegate will attend for one of the practical days (15th May or 16th May allocated on a first come first served basis); all delegates will attend the lecture evening on the 15th May. The main aim of this course is to teach effective gastroscopy via direct “hands on” small group instruction (max 4 per group).

Gastroscopy should allow visualisation of the squamous and glandular mucosa, pyloric outflow and proximal duodenum, all in less than 15 minutes. A thorough technique is vital as small lesions are easily missed and there is no association between squamous and glandular ulceration. You will be taught all the tricks and failure to reach the pylorus will not be an option! An evening of lectures will review the aetiology and treatment of equine gastric ulceration syndrome, provide case management examples and allow time for clinical discussion.

Suitable for RCVS Module:C-E 1 Gastrointestinal disease and intensive care

Dr Tim Brazil BVSc CertEM (IntMed) PhD DipECEIM MRCVS Moreton in Marsh

Venue: The British Racing School, Newmarket, Suffolk
Course Organiser: Nicky Jarvis
Fee: £275 for BEVA Members, £340 for Non-Members
COURSE LIMITED TO 20 DELEGATES
Description:

This course is aimed at general equine practitioners who will be seeing an increasing number of older horses as the average age of the horse population increases. The day begins with lectures covering the commonly encountered geriatric conditions with a very hands on practical session in the afternoon. Here delegates can practice ultrasound of the liver, gain tuition on biopsy techniques and perform dentistry relevant to the older horses’ mouth and specific problems. The day closes with presentation of clinical cases and group discussion with all speakers on suitable diagnosis and treatment. The day will very much take into account that many older horses are uninsured and vets are expected to work within a budget but still achieve ‘best practice’ results.

The topics chosen will be those that are sometimes tricky to assess and/or treat, which have potential consequences for all of these groups of horses and ponies. The meeting is aimed firmly at the mixed and/or equine practitioner and should hopefully have ‘something for everyone’. The speakers are not only experts in their field but also excellent and entertaining speakers.

COURSE LIMITED TO 14 DELEGATES
Description:

This course has been updated and expanded for 2008 covering such new areas as deep uterine insemination, embryo transfer and fetal sexing. The course is designed to benefit those with a range of experience in reproductive and foal ultrasonography. The main emphasis of the course is practical sessions involving mares, foals and clinical cases. There will also be lectures to supplement and reinforce the practical sessions. The first day of the course will include a practical session designed to provide information enabling optimum setting of the machine controls to maximise processing of the image. In addition to the full range of BCF Technology machines available, delegates are welcome to bring their own machines to this session. This will be followed by three lectures to illustrate the general principals of ultrasound and its use in the normal and subfertile mare. The final session will be a workshop style presentation on embryo transfer. The following day will be spent in three groups, two groups examining six mares at a stud farm in conjunction with one of the tutors. The third group will visit a different stud farm to work though a number of mares as routinely presented to a stud farm. This group would suit the more experienced delegate. Rotations will allow plenty of time for discussion of the findings in each mare. There will be demonstrations of mare endoscopy and preparation of the AV as well as flushing the fluid-producing mare and smear preparation. After the practical sessions there will be lectures on the gynaecological investigation of the barren mare, use of fresh-transported and frozen semen in the mare and a DVD illustrating the ultrasound features of early pregnancy and embryonic death in the mare.

The final day will begin with three lectures covering the use of ultrasonography in the late pregnant mare and foal. There will then be a similar rotation of groups as for the previous day as well as demonstrations of techniques in both mares and foals.

Suitable for RCVS Module:C-E 9 Mare reproduction and breeding management; C-E 11 Care and management of foal, yearling and stud farm management, herd health

Course Organiser: Jeremy Mantell
Fee: £455 for BEVA Members, £520 for Non-Members
Includes all meals, accommodation and a trip to the races
COURSE LIMITED TO 36 DELEGATES
Description:

Description: First run in 2000, this intensive weekend course is now firmly established as an ideal entry route into the equine profession and, held in alternate years, is aimed primarily at recent graduates. Designed originally by BEVA to bridge the gap between the theory and practice of working in an equine practice, this popular and enjoyable course aims to combine the art with the science for those who have recently joined, or are planning to work in, an equine practice. It is also ideal for those in general practice who wish to become more confident in their equine work.

We start on Friday late morning with the first of a series of multiple, short but intensive reviews of topics ranging from the pre-purchase examination to euthanasia and from colic to respiratory therapies via the acute eye and orthopaedic emergencies. These presentations concentrate on practical tips that the speakers use and also collate the relevant theory so that delegates are shown “How to…” That evening there is a trip to Glorious Goodwood for a champagne buffet at the races. Lectures continue throughout Saturday and Sunday and include a trip to the Liphook Equine Hospital for a tour and a wet lab and then a course dinner at the University on Saturday evening (with dancing at their nightclub later for the young at heart).

The registration fee (which is heavily subsidised by our sponsors) includes all lectures, notes and books, travel, coffee and meals (and most drinks!) Uniquely, the course fee also includes comfortable accommodation in individual en suite bedrooms on campus. All course notes are included as are copies of BEVA’s two manuals on the Pre-Purchase Examination and Emergency Care at Competitions. The generosity of our sponsors allows this course to be within the budget of all recent graduates.

Why not arrange to meet up again with colleagues from University for a weekend of intensive learning and fun?

Description:

The Ninth International Colic Research Symposium, “The Olympics of Colic Research,” will be hosted by the British Equine Veterinary Association from 15th – 18th June 2008 at the new Liverpool Arena and Conference Centre. The format of the meeting will be similar to that of previous symposia, a mixture of 15-minute oral presentations and two poster sessions.

This is a research-focussed meeting and is likely to include sessions on all aspects of equine gastroenterology including epidemiology, parasitology, intestinal motility, endotoxaemia, clinical practice and post-operative survival.

The waterfront venue for the Symposium has excellent conference facilities, good access to local hotels and is easily accessible by road, rail and from Liverpool and Manchester International Airports.

The International Colic Research Symposium is noted for providing both a high quality scientific programme and a convivial ambience. Both will be recreated in Liverpool in 2008 and BEVA looks forward to welcoming delegates to this unique meeting.

Full details of how to register will be sent to all BEVA members in the New Year.
