BEVA Trust Chairman’s Report, September 2011

Background

The BEVA Trust was established in 1966 to provide a mechanism for giving strategic support to the association and its members. In recent years the scope of work undertaken by the BEVA Trust has expanded considerably, both at home and also overseas.

Income

Historically the Trust’s income has primarily come as donations from BEVA (relating to the Association’s “in-year” surpluses).  Over the last decade income has also been received from other sources including fundraising events, individual donations, collections and legacy bequests. The income to the BEVA Trust over the last 6 years is summarized below in table format.  Substantial charitable funds have been received from the Geoffrey Serth Charitable Trust and the Iris Gates Educational Trust which have specifically covered the costs of the highly successful practice clients meetings and the travel awards for student BEVA members and early-career BEVA members. Last year the BEVA Trust received a generous one-off donation of £10,000 raised during the “Horse Power” CPD event initiated by Professor Derek Knottenbelt.  The annual income from members and friends via Gift Aid donations and investment interest are significant but by themselves are not at a level to sustain the activity and operations of the BEVA Trust.

Activity/Operations

Historically the bulk of the Trust’s expenditure has been small (<£1k) grants relating to travel and education as well as supporting  CPD specifically for early career members including training in dentistry, artificial insemination as well as the “BEVA Trust Essentials of Equine Practice Course”.  However, in recent years the BEVA Trust has supported diverse projects including a variety of overseas initiatives which have wide reaching educational and socio-economic impacts. During 2011 the overseas activities supported by the BEVA Trust included speaker travel support to the World Equine Veterinary Congress in India and the FVE/BEVA Equine Transport Forum in Brussels as well as the BEVA Trust  Equine Transportation Award. Many of the overseas initiatives are travel support for BEVA  member volunteers to travel to the developing world to educate and train, such that the costs involved are often quite small but the impact  is substantial. Expenditure has also included funding of individual projects which can be categorised as being targeted at horse owners, evidence-based medicine through clinical research undertaken within private practice and BEVA’s Safer Horse Rescues programme.   The expenditure since 2006 is summarised below in table format

The Future of the BEVA Trust

Now that the BEVA itself has become a charity limited by guarantee rather than an unincorporated association, the trustees are taking legal advice on how best to achieve integration of the BEVA  Trust within the Association. The trustees will ensure that this is achieved in a cost effective manner with minimal impact on the Trust’s established funding sources and that there is retention of  “ringfenced”  funds to sustain and develop the work of the Trust which was declared on 14th March 1966 by Clifford Formston, Peter Rossdale, Ian Silver and Michael Simons.
